About Fort Collins

Fort Collins is a northern Front Range planning page for bike paths, Poudre River access, reservoir days, foothill parks, outdoor events, and Old Town-to-trail outings.

Make the Most of a Fort Collins Day

Use wind, heat, river conditions, and storm timing to decide between a paved ride, a foothill trail, a paddling window, or an event plan. Foothill weather can change quickly west of town.

Weather Tips for Fort Collins

  • Plains wind, Poudre River flow, afternoon lightning, hail, smoke, and hot exposed paths can all affect Fort Collins outdoor plans.
  • Check wind, waves, current, water temperature, and lightning risk before choosing open water, river, or shoreline plans.
  • For biking, watch wind, heat, trail exposure, and whether recent rain has left dirt, clay, or rock surfaces slick.
  • Have a shore-based backup ready when wind, waves, high flow, or storms make water plans less comfortable.

Nearby Towns and Areas

This page is meant to cover a roughly 25-mile outdoor-planning area around Fort Collins, including Fort Collins, Horsetooth Reservoir, Poudre River routes, Bellvue, and nearby foothill parks west of town. It can also be useful when planning outdoor time near:

  • Horsetooth Reservoir
  • Poudre River
  • Lory State Park
  • Bellvue
  • Old Town Fort Collins
  • Mason Trail
  • Spring Canyon Park
  • Laporte

Plan Around the Conditions

Use the forecast to choose the best version of Fort Collins rather than forcing one itinerary. Match elevation, heat, wind, storm timing, water conditions, trail surfaces, road conditions, fire restrictions, and seasonal closures to the activity that gives your group the most comfortable day.
